The aim of the European project LITES is to install LED street lighting combined with lighting controls to achieve great energy efficient lighting with high energy savings.

The LITES project implements pilot sites of street lighting using LEDs and lighting controls to achieve and demonstrate energy savings of approximately 70%. To achieve this goal, motion detection has been implemented on various locations, all controlled by a CMS to collect data and enable measurements. Partners of this project are the Politecnico di Torino in Italy, the Université Paul Sabatier in Toulouse, France, the Riga Technical University in Latvia, the Universidade de Aveiro in Portugal and the Municipality of Bordeaux, France. Thorn is the sole lighting manufacturer partner for the LITES project.

Sophisticated technology to allow the active and instantaneous dimming of lamp power supply is integral to all LITES pilot sites. A set of embedded sensors measure ambient light, temperature and current, and detect motion. Output sensor data is processed by the embedded intelligence allowing optimum regulation of light levels.

LITES aims at delivering a street lighting compliant with road classes CE2- CE5, S- and A- according to the EN13201 standard. This means the luminaires can be installed in secondary streets, access roads, allotments, pedestrian ways, cycle tracks and residential areas. LITES is also compliant with all electric standards for luminaire general requirements and tests as well.

Examples of the pilot sites include:

  • Municipality of Bordeaux, France – Where 44 lighting points in a residential area previously equipped with HST 150W lamps have been renovated with Thorn's Dyana LED 56W and various lighting controls based on motion detection.

       Installed since September 2013

  • University of Aveiro, Portugal – Where Thorn's Gladiator luminaire and MICAS sensors are illuminating the university campus footbridge using pilot wiring and a corridor function, 32 lighting points.

       Installed since September 2013

  • Riga, Latvia – Where various routes around a university illuminated with HST luminaires have been renovated using Dyana LED and Steinel sensors, 26 lighting points.

       Installed since March 2013
