Seine River pathway, France
- Lamp efficacy
Lamp efficacy
Ensuring the lamp efficiently converts electricity into light (lm/W).
- Ballast classification
Ballast classification
Controlling the electricity supply to the lamp (Energy Efficiency Index).
- Luminaire distribution
Luminaire distribution
Controlling light emission using optics which bend and shape the light to the correct location.
- System efficacy
System efficacy
The use of GT LED which combines high quality optical and thermal control within the luminaire results in an excellent system efficacy of 78 Llm/W, efficiently converting electricity into light.
- Presence/absence detection
Presence/absence detection
Presence: Lights automatically turn on/off with movement. Absence: Lights automatically turn off and must be manually switched on.
- Daylight detection
Daylight detection
Artificial lighting which responds to the natural light conditions.
- Constant illuminance
Constant illuminance
A function designed to produce correct light levels for the duration of the maintenance period.
- Task-scene setting
Task-scene setting
Allowing the user to set scenes and adapt the lighting to different tasks.
- Timed off
Timed off
Through the use of a time clock the luminaires are automatically turned off during unoccupied hours. This synchronises the luminaires with the switching patterns within the rest of the city and saves energy.
- Task lighting
Task lighting
Lighting task areas with the correct amount of light.
- Zoning of lighting
Zoning of lighting
Lighting is zoned according to area use.
- Maintenance schedule
Maintenance schedule
The maintenance schedule is tailored to GT LED and the environment. By minimising loss of light output through time and using a luminaire which is easy to maintain and suitable for the environment, the correct balance of resource required to maintain the lighting against additional installed lighting is achieved.
- Waste light
Waste light
Eliminating waste light which does not hit the intended target.
- Reflectance
Reflectance
Taking advantage of light which is reflected from the surface within the space.
- Visible smart metering
Visible smart metering
Results of actions can be quickly seen as increased or decreased energy use to encourage responsible energy consumption.
Romantic Seine River pathway now efficient too
The Seine River is a 482 miles long and flows through the City of Corbeil Essonnes, which is situated just 25km from the centre of Paris and close to Disneyland. It is an important commercial waterway and offers sightseeing gems including tours of the Rive Driote and Rive Gauche.
Ranked number 10 of 1566 things to do in Paris by Lonely Planet travellers, the river is a Parisian experience which has been enjoyed for centuries.
As well as providing a beautiful riverside walk by day, the romance is heightened with the watery reflections of monuments and bridges by night.
Having already worked with Thorn on previous projects, the City of Corbeil Essonnes approached Thorn with a tight delivery time to refurbish a 200-metre pathway with LED lighting. The aim was to reduce energy consumption and improve the quality of light with a solution also offering greater durability.
Migrating from fluorescent to GT LED
Gilles Vendeirinho, Sales Manager at Thorn Lighting explains: "The old installation comprised 35 T16 (2x49W) luminaires. As well as being inefficient, the lamps were regularly failing so the city's norms were frequently not being achieved. Thorn was awarded the contract on the basis of the 60W GT LED product put forward, the ability to meet the delivery time and the strength of the regional team."
GT LED is an advanced luminaire delivering energy savings and outstanding lighting comfort. Although it is typically used for tunnel lighting, its slimline dimensions minimise protrusion and therefore met the mounting restrictions for this riverside application. GT LED's innovative lenses and reflectors provide excellent light control and high luminance levels of at least 2cd/m2. The combination of optical and thermal control within the luminaire also ensures a high efficiency of 78 Llm/W. In addition to a unique low glare design, GT LED has a 4100K colour temperature to create a comfortable environment for users.
"The City of Corbeil Essonnes now enjoys excellent lighting uniformity and reduced energy consumption along this key stretch," says Gilles. "Importantly, maintenance has also been significantly reduced from once a year to once every 12 years thanks to the longevity of the LED lamps, IP66 rating and optimised maintenance schedule."
